Walk Your Butt to the Can!
Cigarette butts are the most littered item in America! Research shows that individuals who would never consider littering an aluminum can, a piece of paper or other items may be littering cigarette butts. They may be surprised to be called litterers. But dropping partially-smoked cigarettes, cigarette butts, matches, lighters and packaging to the ground is littering. These items become litter when not disposed of properly. Cigarette litter is an emerging litter problem in communities around the country. Lack of awareness, lack of ash receptacles, and the increase of outdoor smoking add to the visible impact of cigarette litter.
What can we do about it?
Portable Ash Trays: Carry a portable ash tray in your purse or pocket. It extinguishes your cigarette and provides a holding place for the butt until you find a trash receptacle to dispose it. iLivehere provides portable ash trays free of charge. Stop by the Scott Area Recycling Center, 5460 Carey Avenue, Davenport between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to pick one up or e-mail or call us at 563-468-4218 to have one sent by mail.
Ash Receptacles: iLivehere, in conjuntion with Davenport Public Works and the Iowa Quad City Chamber installed ash receptacles in front of seven locations in the downtown area. If your business is interested in an ash receptacle, e-mail iLivehere or call 563-468-4218 for more information.
